Setup

Note:  Setting up these instructions will override any Contacts or Calendars already on the device.  Back them up prior to following these instructions or be sure to configure the device NOT to sync that information.

  1. Tap ‘Settings’
  2. Tap ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars’
  3. Tap ‘Add Account’
  4. Tap ‘Exchange’
  5. Use the following settings:
  • Email:  user@sfopera.com
  • Domain:  sfopera.net
  • User Name:  user@sfopera.com
  • Password:  (your password)
  • Description:  (anything)
  • Server:  webmail.sfopera.com
  • Ensure that SSL is enabled
  1. After entering the information correctly, the phone will be able to connect to the Opera email server and verify the settings.  If the settings are correct, you’ll be prompted to accept the security policy discussed below.

SF Opera Email Account to a Smartphone Policy

Notes:  In order to successfully connect a smartphone to your SF Opera email account, there are security policies on the SF Opera email server that must be accepted to complete the setup.  These policies include the following:

  1. The contents of your phone must be encrypted.  If they are not currently encrypted, they will be as a result of this process.
  2. Your phone must be configured with a PIN to unlock it.  If you do not currently have a PIN set on your phone, this process will force you to do so.  Consequently, after a period of inactivity on your phone, your phone will automatically lock; this PIN is required to unlock it.  To some extent, the length of time of inactivity can be controlled by you, but it cannot be disabled completely once the SF Opera email account has been configured.
  3. Your smartphone can be ‘remotely wiped’ from the SF Opera email server.  This policy protects SF Opera data (as well as your own) on your phone.  If your phone is lost or stolen, once you notify your carrier of this, you should call the SF Opera HelpDesk at 415.551.6363 immediately to inform the I.S. Department of the loss.  An SF Opera I.S. Department administrator will initiate the remote wipe sequence, and the next time the phone tries to contact the SF Opera network, the phone will be completely reset to its factory defaults.
  4. Part of the process of setting up SF Opera email on a smartphone is to enter your SF Opera account password.  This password is entered manually by you and will NOT be automatically updated on your phone when you are forced to reset it on the network every 90 days.  Consequently you should update the password on your phone immediately on resetting it on the network.  If you do not do so, your phone continues to try to connect to your SF Opera email account with an incorrect password, and your account will be locked out fairly quickly.  Your account will unlock automatically after one hour, or you can contact the HelpDesk for an administrator to unlock it for you.
